The international Advantage for Canada
- International students are an ideal way to grow our workforce: they are well-educated, they speak English or French, they have adapted to Canadian society, and they are familiar with our culture
- Many international students want to stay in the province after graduation. Most of them have one simple condition: they need to find worthwhile employment.
- In this increasingly globalized economy, having employees who may speak a different language, are familiar with other cultural norms and have diverse connections worldwide can be a real advantage.
- Hiring international students is a win-win both for Canadian employers and for international students. International students may have diverse experiences and connections in other parts of the world which could help grow and expand a business in Canada, particularly one interested in exporting.
- International students with extensive work experience in related fields will be an asset for small to medium sized companies that don’t necessarily have to hire full time staff for some of their roles. This allows room for financial savings while not compromising efficiency and quality.

Talent and Work Ready but face barriers
- International students who come to Canada to complete their studies or part of their studies are a boon to Canadian businesses. In a period of labour shortage, they represent not only an opportunity for companies to fill the gap but also a source of qualified talent. In fact, 75% of them have degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
- To help address the labour gap in the industry, the federal government has recently announced a temporary lift on off-campus work hours.
- While there is a lot of good work happening federal and provincially to integrate IS into the workforce, there is anecdotal evidence that majority of the students find employment in sectors that don’t necessarily match their academic or professional experience.
- This could be due to many reasons and barriers due to the IS being new to Canada and not understanding the processes.
- There could be other employment barriers such as needing a drivers license but not having a car to practice for the test and other cultural differences that haven’t been researched widely.
- Historically students rely on peer network of friends and when majority of the IS seek employment in the retail sector, it becomes a norm for IS to continue working there when they arrive in Canada.
- There is also evidence that Canadian employers are hesitant to hire a foreigner.
- But, more can be done.. And that is the Half Story... Hire Skills!
